What Is ADHD & Executive Function Coaching?
ADHD Coaching is an emerging, specialised field — and while it isn't yet a formally regulated profession in Australia, it isn't a title anyone should adopt without proper training either. The Australasian ADHD Professionals Association (AADPA) — whose Australian Evidence-Based Clinical Practice Guideline for ADHD (2022) is endorsed by Australia's National Health and Medical Research Council and recognises ADHD coaching as a legitimate non-pharmacological intervention — sets recommended practice standards for the field. Alongside international certifying bodies like the ICF (International Coaching Federation), these standards give the field real structure and accountability, wherever in the world a coach practises.
Legitimate ADHD coaches complete accredited training grounded in the neuroscience of executive function and ADHD, and hold themselves to these professional standards. Kirsten holds ICF Professional Certified Coach (PCC) accreditation — one of the ICF's more advanced credential levels — and is an associate member of AADPA, keeping her aligned with Australia's leading clinical body for ADHD practice.
Our approach is strength-based, solutions-focused, and client-driven — grounded in how the ADHD brain actually works. Rather than teaching you about ADHD, coaching works directly with your executive function patterns in real time: building new neural pathways through practical, individualised strategies, not generic productivity advice repackaged for ADHD.
Working with a certified ADHD coach means you're getting a structured methodology backed by science and recognised practice standards, not guesswork. Together, we'll build a toolbox of resources, learn to recognise when ADHD or executive function challenges are arising, and develop the skills to move through them — sustainably.
How ADHD Coaching Can Help You
The science — and art — of truly coaching someone with ADHD starts with one core belief: every client is naturally creative, resourceful, and whole. Nothing about you is broken. You already have what you need within you to make the changes you're seeking — coaching helps you access it.
(A little science, because we can't help but nerd out.)
Our day-to-day actions, responses, and behaviours are shaped by different levels of consciousness — conscious, subconscious, and unconscious. Research suggests that around 90% of our daily behaviours, habits, and decisions are driven by the subconscious mind — running quietly in the background. It stores our long-term memory, emotional experiences, fears, and learned responses, and shapes our automatic intuition. Sometimes, that background code needs an upgrade.
That's where neuroplasticity comes in — the brain's ability to grow new neural pathways and build new skills, with practice, at any age.
So what does this have to do with coaching? Working with a certified professional coach means working with someone trained to help you move beyond surface-level thinking into deeper self-awareness — accessing the subconscious patterns beneath your habits, uncovering root causes, and shifting the internal narrative you carry about yourself. This is where genuine breakthroughs happen.
Coaching helps you:
-
Notice your habits and patterns
-
Understand the subconscious drivers behind them
-
Reframe old thinking, habits, and beliefs that fuel unhelpful patterns
-
Design new, ADHD-friendly habits that genuinely support your goals
Coaching isn't just about building action plans — it's about developing new self-awareness, uncovering what's beneath the surface, and using that insight to unlearn old patterns, rewrite limiting beliefs, and take empowered action that actually lasts.
Coaching is about moving forward; therapy is about healing the past. If, as your coach, I hear something that I believe needs therapeutic support, I'll always tell you.
